May’s Membership Meeting: Walking Tour of Grand Rapids Historical riverwalk

We will be doing a self-guided walking tour of the Downtown Historical Riverwalk. This tour gives glimpses into the historical development of life around the Grand River, including the bridges, people, and places that surround it.

We will be starting the walk at the “Riverwalk Ah Nab Awen Park” This is located off of Michigan Street on the West side of the River. We will walk along the river down to the “Blue Bridge” cross the bridge and work our way back to the “Bridge Street Bridge”.  There are 15 stops along the way where we will discover the following things:  1 – Historical Riverwalk, 2 – Disappearance of the Rapids, 3 – Logging & Furniture, 4 – Interurban, 5 – Hopewell Mounds, 6 – Furniture Strike, 7 – River Boundaries, 8 – Blue Bridge, 9 – Floods, 10 – Pearl Street Bridge, 11 – Amway Grand & Prospect Hill, 12 – Civic Auditorium, 13 – Parking Problems, 14 – Grand Trunk Depot, Post Office, & 15 – Bridge Street Bridge.

After the walk we will be going to The Knickerbocker – New Holland Brewing (417 Bridge St NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504) for the meeting portion of the evening and Dinner.
